Meeting of Commission for Theological Dialogue between Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches in Alexandria

His Beatitude Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa and the Patriarchate of Alexandria hosts the meeting of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches. This important meeting, which will last from June 1 to June 7, will be attended by 24 Orthodox and 18 Catholic representatives, clergy and lay theologians.

The International Commission is the highest official body for the “Dialogue of Love” between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The aforementioned Commission met for the first time on the sacred island of Patmos in 1980 and progressively met in various parts of the world where a series of critical theological issues were discussed.

The declarations issued at these meetings laid the foundation for the ongoing global meeting and dialogue between the two Churches. The last meeting was held in Chieti in Italy in 2016 and it was about the Primacy and Synodality in the Church in the first millennium. The Commission will be discussing the same subject in the second millennium as well.

The official opening ceremony of the International Joint Theological Commission will take place today, June 1, at the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
