Funeral Service for the late Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon
On Saturday, 4 February 2023, at the Metropolitan Church of Athens, the Funeral Service for the Late Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon took place, distinguished hierarch of the Ecumenical Throne and great theologian of our time, with international recognition and impact.
The Funeral Service was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Theodoritos of Laodicea, Director of the Representative Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Athens, who represented His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
Participating also in the funeral service were the following Metropolitans: Metropolitan Makarios of Anea (Ecumenical Patriarchate), Metropolitan George of Guinea (Patriarchate of Alexandria), Metropolitan Ignatios of Dimitrias and Almyros, Metropolitan Nicholas of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Messinia, Metropolitan Nektarios of Argolis, Metropolitan Amphilochios of Adrianopole, Metropolitan Gregorios of Peristeri, Metropolitan Damaskinos of Aitolia and Akarnania, His Grace Bishop Maximus of Western America of the Patriarchate of Serbia and His Grace Bishop Philotheos of Oreoi, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.
Joined also in prayer were: His Eminence Archbishop Evgenios of Crete, who in the morning celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Metropolitan Church, His Eminence Metropolitan Kyrillos of Krini, representatives of political authorities and academic bodies and a crowd of many faithful.
The Eulogy was spoken by His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos of Sylivria, Hierarch of the Ecumenical Throne, who for many years enjoyed a close spiritual connection with the Late Metropolitan and Hierarch. On Behalf of the Academy of Athens, Academic Emmanuel Roukounas spoke and offered words.
Eulogies were then delivered by:
Deputy Professor Stavros Giagazoglou, on behalf of the Faculty of Theology of NKUA, on behalf of the Faculty of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where Blessed Metropolitan John had been a professor, His Eminence Metropolitan Andreas of Arkalochori, Kastelli and Viannos, Professor of the Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture, and the Director of the Academy of Theological Studies of Volos Pantelis Kalaitzidis. It is reminded that the Academy of Volos had already honoured the blessed Metropolitan John of Pergamon in 2011.
The Mayor of Velventos Kozani, Emmanuel Stergiou, also delivered a eulogy, as the late hierarch came from the Velventos Kozani Region. The burial of Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon took place in the First Cemetery of Athens.
It is worth noting that Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon had been a regular member of the Athens Academy since 1993 and served as its President in 2002. The Academy of Athens flew the flag of its Palace at half-mast for three days after the announcement of his falling asleep in the Lord.
