Victorian COVID-19 outbreak spreads to aged care as state records five new cases
An aged care worker has tested positive for COVID-19 after working at a facility in Melbourne’s north-west, sending the home into lockdown.
The worker at Arcare Maidstone – who tested for the virus as soon as she experienced symptoms last week – was one of five locally acquired COVID-19 cases reported in Victoria on Sunday.
The Altona woman was not showing symptoms when she last worked at the home on May 27.
While three of Sunday’s new cases have been linked to the current outbreak, two are still under investigation.
Aged care worker first mystery case of cluster
The fifth case is the aged care worker at Arcare Maidstone – described on Sunday by COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar as the first mystery case of the cluster so far.
“This is the first mystery case we have seen in this particular outbreak. We now have a total of four positive cases in the community that we’ve identified. This one case is currently not linked. This is, of course, a significant concern for us.”
Mr Weimar said the aged care worker’s infectious period was thought to be between Wednesday and Thursday last week (May 26 and 27).
