200th anniversary of the blessed discovery and translation of the wonder-working Holy Icon of the Panagia of Tinos
Monday, 30 January 2023, marked the 200th anniversary of the discovery of a wonder-working icon of the Panagia, the All-Holy Virgin Mary, in a grove on the Cyclades island of Tinos, the site where the emblematic Cathedral of the Evangelistria, dedicated to the Mother of God, stands today, one of Orthodoxy’s most prominent pilgrimage sites.
Discovery and Translation of the Holy Icon, during works to construct the cathedral, were viewed as a God-send that the Greek War of Independence, which had erupted two years earlier, would be crowned with victory, leading to the end of dour Ottoman occupation of southern and central Greece, numerous islands, along with the emergence of the modern Greek state.
An excellent documentary, entitled “Our Lady of Tinos,” detailing the discovery of the Holy Icon and the visions seen by a pious local nun, Pelagia, who was instructed over the Holy Icon’s existence, has been posted on the pages of Pemptousia television.
