Twenty Years of CGL Examinations in Western Australia

2024 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) Examinations in Western Australia. In 2004, St. Andrew’s Grammar was established as the official examination centre for these international examinations, with the first examinations being held in May 2005.  They have been offered to candidates from all local Greek education providers ever since.  Over the twenty-year period, 303 candidates have sat for the CGL Examinations in Perth.

This year, there were 20 candidates and the levels that were attempted were all except for the most challenging Level C2.  Of the 20 candidates, the following 17 were successful in achieving their level:

Level A1 (8-12 years old)
KOUTSAKIS Emmanouil
ROUMELIOTIS William
TSITIRIDOU Eleana
VASSILIADIS Marianthi

Level A1 (adolescents and adults)

A heartfelt congratulations is extended to all the above candidates who sat for and passed these rigorous and lengthy academic examinations!  Successful candidates must score 60% or more in all sections of the examination to pass the level being attempted.  Ten of the 17 candidates achieved a grade of ‘Excellent’, with the remaining seven attaining a grade of ‘Very Good’.

These international examinations are aligned with the Common European Framework levels of language competence, and success is recognised by Greece’s Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sport, and the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) in Thessaloniki.  As such, the successful candidates have been awarded the internationally recognised Certificate of Attainment in Greek at various events during the latter half of the year.

Congratulations are also extended to the following Greek education providers from where candidates were registered:

The Greek Language and Culture Institute (GLCI) of Evangelismos (16 candidates)

Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis, Director of the CGL at St. Andrew’s Grammar comments ” I am extremely proud to be the inaugural Director of the CGL Examinations in WA and to have been involved for two decades now in offering this service to the local Greek and wider community, as we have also had non-Greek background candidates sit for these examinations over the years!”

Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis thanked the examination co-invigilators, Ms Maria Svarnou and Mrs Katerina Reklitis for their assistance over the three days in 2024, along with St. Andrew’s Grammar Principal, Mr Craig Monaghan and staff for hosting these examinations on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 May. Special thanks were extended to the Dean and Head of the Graduate School of Education, UWA, Professor Tanya Fitzgerald for hosting the Level B1 examinations on Thursday 16 May when St. Andrew’s Grammar was not available.
