The Translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Nektarios in Cairo

The Orthodox Church celebrates on the 3rd of September, the commemoration of the translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Nectarios, which took place on 3 September 1953.

This is a feast of living memory for the entire Orthodox Christian world, but it has special significance for the Orthodox Christians of Cairo.

Saint Nektarios spent a significant part of his life in Cairo. He was ordained Bishop of Pentapolis in the Church of Saint Nicholas in Hamzawi, Cairo, and spent many years of his life as Patriarchal Commissioner of Cairo, residing in the Episcopal Residence, which is now an important museum space visited by thousands of faithful from around the world.

Every year, the memory of the translation of his relics is honoured in Cairo in the small chapel located on the ground floor of the old Episcopal Residence building.

His Grace Bishop Stephanos of Ippon presided over the Divine Liturgy in a particularly mystical atmosphere, and the Chief Chanter of the Greek Community of Cairo, Mr. Alexandros Rigakis, chanted the hymns. Also present was His Eminence Metropolitan Nikodimos of Memphis, the Patriarchal Commissioner of Cairo.
