The Patriarch of Alexandria was declared an honorary citizen of Rethymno
His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and all Africa was declared an honorary citizen of the Municipality of Rethymno on Tuesday, 29 October 2024.
The declaration ceremony took place under the auspices of the Mayor of Rethymno, Mr Giorgis Marinakis, in the Municipal Council chamber of the municipality.
The Patriarch was honoured by the presence of representatives from Patriarchates and Churches, as well as institutional representatives from political and academic authorities of the island and the country, mayors from Rethymno and Crete, and representatives from various political parties.
The mayor referred to the unanimous decision by the Rethymno Municipal Council, following his proposal, and explained the reasons for this honour, highlighting the exceptional pastoral, missionary, and renovative work carried out by the humble figure of the Patriarchal Throne of Alexandria over the past 20 years.
