The First Isidoreia for 2023 in the Holy Metropolis of Chios
With the grace and help of the Triune God and the actions of His Eminence Metropolitan Markos of Chios, the oldest ecclesiastical monument of Chios, the Early Christian Basilica of ‘Agios Isidoros’ (4th-5th century), was renovated and restored to its ancient form.
Therefore, this current Pan-Orthodox Holy Pilgrimage is the focus of honouring the memory of the First Martyr of Chios, given that the Saint’s tomb is also located there.
The celebration from this year took the form of the First Isidorion, i.e. Holy Services throughout the week, from May 8 to 14, 2023, in honour of Saint Isidore.
On Sunday, after the end of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, the Litany of the Holy Relic and the Holy Icon of the Holy Great Martyr Isidoros of Chios followed, which started from Melek Pasha’s Fountain, the place of martyrdom of the New Martyrs, and proceeded through the streets of Dimokratia, Kanari, Aegean Avenue, Neophytos Vamva, Korai and Skylitsis to the Holy Metropolitan Church of Chios.
The authorities and the pious people of the island participated and prayed together.
During his sermon, His Eminence Metropolitan Markos referred to the ancestry of Saint Isidore from Egypt, to the spiritual opportunities of Egypt (Righteous Joseph the Handsome, Moses, flight to Egypt, Mark the Evangelist), but also in the Ministry of the Foreign Mission in the African Continent, in the countries with the laden ears of corn, which are waiting to receive the seed of Christ, the Christ who took on the nature of man of every race to lead all to salvation.
