The Feast of the Deposition of the Precious Robe of the Theotokos in Blachernae
The Feast Day of the Deposition of the Precious Robe of the Theotokos was celebrated festively on Sunday, 2 July 2023, at the Holy Spring of Panagia Blachernae in Constantinople.
The Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Theoliptos of Iconium. Following this, a Litany of the Holy Icon of the Theotokos took place around the grounds of the Holy Church and Spring.
In the Holy Church of Blachernae, built by Empress Pulcheria, daughter of Emperor Arcadius and wife of Emperor Markianus (451 – 457 AD), the burial shrouds of the Virgin Mary, which had been sent by the Patriarch Juvenalius of Jerusalem, were deposited. When Leo I The Thracian was emperor (457 – 474 AD), the patricians Galbius and Candidus brought from Jerusalem the holy robe of the Most Holy Theotokos. Leo received the robe and deposited it in the Church of Blachernae, inside a golden shrine.
