The Ecumenical Patriarch inaugurated the new Museum of the Metropolis of Ioannina
The Center for the Protection and Promotion of History and Art, as the new museum of the Holy Metropolis of Ioannina was named, was inaugurated on Wednesday by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew, in the context of his visit to the city, in the presence of the Minister of Culture of Greece, Mrs. Linas Mendoni.
His All-Holiness and the Minister were given a tour of the two floors of the museum, which is housed in an exemplary restored building of the old Jewish quarter of Ioannina and includes important exhibits of the ecclesiastical art and tradition of Ioannina.
This was followed by a visit to the Island of Lake Ioannina and to the Monasteries of ‘Agios Nikolaos of Philanthropines’ and ‘Panagia Eleousa’, in which restoration and conservation works of their exceptional mural iconographical decoration have been carried out in recent years by the competent services of the Ministry of Culture.
