The Achievement of the University Cardiology Clinic at “Sotiria”

Professor of Cardiology (and Rector of the University of Athens) Gerasimos Siasos took over a clinic in a state of severe disrepair and, with the help of benefactors, transformed it from scratch into a modern healthcare facility.

In his column, “Vimatodotis” recounts his visit to a public hospital. He admits that he initially had a negative opinion about public hospitals, based on what he had heard and seen on television—the disputes between Adonis Georgiadis and healthcare workers, delays in surgeries, the new on-call system, and overcrowded hallways filled with stretchers.

However, his visit to the university cardiology clinic at “Sotiria” changed his perspective. “Where I expected to see patients crammed onto stretchers in the hallways and long queues outside the heart attack unit, I instead saw paintings of hearts on the walls, a cutting-edge heart attack unit equipped with state-of-the-art technology, spotlessly clean, and operating flawlessly—a public clinic unlike any other in Greece, even compared to other departments within ‘Sotiria,'” he notes.

Professor Gerasimos Siasos (and Rector of the University of Athens) took over a clinic in a state of severe disrepair and, with the help of benefactors, transformed it from scratch into a modern healthcare facility. Specifically, he repurposed an abandoned bank branch within the hospital—a former branch of the Agricultural Bank—by removing counters and offices and creating an ultramodern hemodynamic laboratory, boasting some of the most advanced medical equipment in Greece, including a hybrid coronary angiograph that enables simultaneous cardiological and cardiac surgical procedures.

“There is order, discipline, and respect for patients (and their relatives), and most importantly, the clinic is staffed by exceptionally skilled young cardiologists and trainees, making it the youngest hospital clinic in Greece in terms of scientific personnel,” Vimatodotis highlights.
