Sydney: The 2023 Annual Greek Orthodox Scripture Conference
With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the 2023 Annual Greek Orthodox Scripture Conference took place on Monday, 20 November 2023 at the Parish Hall of the Church of Saint Gerasimos.
With over 60 dedicated attendees, the event brought together volunteers from various corners of Sydney. They were united by their commitment to teaching scripture in public schools. Mr. Murray Norman, the CEO of Better Balanced Futures was the keynote speaker.
Mr. Norman gave an insight into the maintenance of Special Religious Education (SRE) programs. He stressed the crucial importance of having a voice in upholding the right to teach religion.
Mr. Norman also shared his experiences in advocacy. He commended the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia for its exceptional organisation and efficiency as a registered provider.
One of the conference’s highlights was the showcasing of examples illustrating how local parishes have built connections between students in the classroom and their local church. These initiatives go beyond the classroom, fostering a deeper connection between young minds and the rich traditions of the Greek Orthodox faith. The conference attendees left inspired, armed with practical strategies to implement in their own parishes.
The event would not have been possible without the support of Father Constantine Varipatis. Additionally, Father Panteleimon’s gracious hosting of the conference at the Parish of Saint Gerasimos added a warm touch to the proceedings.
As the 2023 Annual Greek Orthodox Scripture Conference came to an end, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm. The event served not only as a platform for professional development but also as a testament to the enduring importance of religious education in shaping the hearts and minds of the next generation.
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia continues to stand at the forefront of this noble cause, building bridges that span the gap between church and school.
