Sydney: Memorial for the fallen of the Battle of Crete
On Sunday, 21 May 2023, at the Holy Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady, in Sydney, after the divine liturgy for the feast day of Saints Constantine and Helen, Equal to the Apostles, a memorial service for the repose of the souls of the fallen during the battle of Crete, took place. The Memorial was conducted by the Chancellor of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and Parish Priest of the Cathedral, Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne Christophoros Krikelis, representing his Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
Father Christophoros read the Message of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia for the 82nd Anniversary of the Battle of Crete, in the presence of the committee and members of the Cretan Brotherhood of Sydney and New South Wales, including young people of Cretan descent who stood proudly, holding the flags of Greece and Australia and dressed in traditional costumes of the ‘Great-Island’ of Crete.
The Heroes of the Battle of Crete, Greeks and Australians who fought alongside them, as soldiers of the Allied forces, were honoured by the presence of the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mr. Yannis Mallikourtis, together with his wife, the Senior Officer of the Australian Navy, Mr. Ioannis Stavridis and other officials.
