Scott Morrison unveils Australia’s plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will take a firm 2050 net zero commitment and an updated emissions projection for 2030 to the Glasgow climate summit.

Mr Morrison made the announcement on Tuesday as he unveiled his government’s long-awaited plan to achieve the mid-century target.

He said the plan put forward would “get the balance right” between protecting jobs and industries through the energy transition.

“Australians will set our own path by 2050 and we’ll set it here by Australians for Australians,” Mr Morrison told reporters in Canberra.

The prime minister said the net zero target would be supported by an updated projection for 2030 to reduce emissions by 30 to 35 per cent.

However, the government won’t formally update its current official short-term target to reduce emissions by 26-28 per cent by 2030 on 2005 levels.

A review of the 2050 policy will also be conducted every five years by the Productivity Commission focused on how rural and regional communities are faring.

The policy reveal comes after protracted negotiations with junior Coalition partner the Nationals to hammer out the final details of the plan.
