Scientists monitor persistent seismic activity in Mount Athos area
Scientists are closely monitoring a series of seismic events around Mount Athos in Halkidiki.
Kostas Papazachos, a seismologist from the Geology Department at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, expressed caution regarding the ongoing seismic sequence. “The activity has been continuous for several weeks,” he noted. “Given the limited information about the region’s tectonic characteristics, we cannot rule out the possibility of a larger earthquake.”
On the previous day, the area experienced two noticeable tremors, measuring 4.1 and 4.2 in magnitude, at 4:26 and 4:39 in the afternoon, respectively. These were followed by several weaker aftershocks.
