Rebuilt Saint Eleftherios Church in Bukoba, Tanzania

A new Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Eleftherios was built in the town of Rukoma, in extreme northwest Tanzania, with donations from the parishes of St. Eleftherios in the Acharnon district of central Athens, and the same-name parish in the Gyzi district, also in Athens.

The previous small chapel of St. Eleftherios, at the same site, was built in 1993 under the first Bishop of Bukoba Jonah. In fact, the Orthodox place of worship was adorned with Byzantine-style icons from the hand of the monk Kallistos Polatidis.

However, the chapel was later partially destroyed by rainfall and erosion.

The consecration of the new Saint Eleftherios Church was celebrated last Sunday with His Grace Bishop Chrysostomos of Bukoba officiating.
