Raising of the Greek Flag 300 square metres at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi, Crete
In an atmosphere of emotion, this year, shortly after 1 pm on Tuesday, 8 November 2022, the raising of the Greek flag of 300 square metres took place in the forecourt of the Holy Monastery of Arkadi in Rethymno, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Holocaust. 156 years have passed since this historic event, with the protagonists of 966 fighters who fought for Freedom and the union of Crete with Greece and who had set as their base the historic monastery of Arkadi.
The last dramatic act, the blowing up of the gunpowder storehouse of the monastery by Kostis Giamboudakis or according to others Emmanuel Skoulas, in order for the proud fighters not to surrender to the Ottomans.
At this year’s celebrations, as has been the case in recent years, the gigantic flag that the members of the volunteer group “Syn-polis” proudly raised in the sky of Arkadi caused shivers of emotion, causing intense emotion to those present.
It is worth noting that the 300 square metre flag is one of the largest in all of Greece.
The President of the association ‘Syn-Polis’, Mr Giorgos Papadosifos comment amongst other things:
“We were at the historic Arkadiou monastery today, 156 years after the holocaust of the monastery, in order to honour the memory of the fighters who gave their lives during the Cretan Revolution of 1866. We are proud.”
