On Sunday, 26 March 2023, the official celebration of the National Anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 will take place in Adelaide, South Australia.
An announcement was issued by the Archdiocesan District Office of Adelaide, listing the full program of festive events, inviting everyone to take part.
The announcement in detail as follows:
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia invites our faithful to participate in the celebrations of Greek Independence Day, which will take place on Sunday, 26th of March 2023.
The program for the celebrations is as follows:
7:30am: Matins, Divine Liturgy and Doxology at the Archiepiscopal Church of Saint Sophia, 100 Drayton Street, Bowden, celebrated by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope.
12:30pm: Memorial Service at the War Memorial, North Terrace, officiated by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope, for the repose of the souls of our forefathers who fought heroically and sacrificed their lives for the faith and the nation.
Afterwards, beginning with the Hon. Consul General of Greece in Adelaide, Mr George Psiachas, wreaths will be laid in honour of the fallen by our State’s civil and military authorities, as well as representatives of the Greek Community organisations.
Following the wreath laying, the students of the Colleges and the Afternoon and Saturday Greek Schools of our Holy Archdiocese will parade from the War Memorial to the Torrens Parade Ground.
At the Torrens Parade Ground, and in the festive spirit of the day, there will be songs and poems and traditional dance performances by our students as well as food and drinks available for purchase.
We are all called to join in celebrating the National Anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 to enhance the feeling of our own self-awareness and self-consciousness, as well as in the hearts of our children and grandchildren. Without the liberation of a nation, no one would be free to worship Christ and be called a Christian.
