Presentation by Dr. Mario Baghos : The Fall of Constantinople and the Ecumenical Patriarchate”
‘Sailing to Byzantium,’ this year covering the period between 1453-1821 in commemoration of the 200-year anniversary of the Greek Revolution, continues with this important talk by Dr Mario Baghos. Come and hear about the final days of Constantinople, the last Roman Emperor Constantine Palaiologos, the role of the first Ecumenical Patriarch after the conquest of the City — Gennadios Scholarios — and the significance of the Church in keeping Orthodoxy and Romiosini (later described as Hellenism) alive in this period.
Dr Baghos will be introduced by Dr Patricia Koromvokis, Lecturer in the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature at Macquarie University and head of the Modern Greek programme there.
