Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria visits Greek Schools in Cairo

On Monday, 30 September 2024, His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria visited Greek schools in Cairo, accompanied by His Eminence Metropolitan Nikodimos of Memphis, the Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo. The visit began with a warm and reverent welcome in the schools’ courtyard, where representatives of the Greek community, the parents’ association, and teachers gathered to greet him.

The first stop was the Church of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, where the Patriarch lit a candle and offered a prayer. Following this, he visited the Ampetios School, where he was warmly welcomed by school principals Vasilis Lagios and Vasilis Bakouros. Students and teachers greeted him with enthusiasm, and students from the Gymnasium and Lyceum performed a traditional dance, earning the applause of the audience and the Patriarch.

During the event, school principals and Education Coordinator Mr. George Kokorelis expressed their gratitude for the Patriarch’s visit, highlighting the significance of his presence for the students and teachers. A particularly emotional moment came when the students presented commemorative gifts to the Patriarch, who warmly thanked everyone for their heartfelt welcome and their dedication to educating the children of the Greek community.

Patriarch Theodore spoke with affection about the children of Africa, acknowledging the challenges they face and the support provided to them through the Mission. He emphasised the need for prayer and aid, noting that despite difficult circumstances, the children’s smiles remain radiant.

The event concluded with a treat of traditional pies, which the Patriarch praised, likening them to his mother’s cooking. The visit ended with a tour of the recently renovated Spetseropouleio Megaron, where the Patriarch commended the Greek community for their efforts in preserving cultural heritage.

The Patriarch’s visit was a significant event for the Greek community in Cairo, bringing together students, teachers, and Church representatives in a day filled with joy, emotion, and tradition.
