Patras honoured the memory of Germanos III of Old Patra, 197 years since his passing away

In the Holy Church of Saint John the Theologian of the Diocese of Patras, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, 30 May 2023, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Patras, as well as the holy Memorial Service for the blessed memory and eternal rest of the venerable Hierarch Germanos Metropolitan of Old Patras , who fell asleep at the age of 55, in Nafplio, on May 30, 1826.

Metropolitan Chrysostomos in his address referred to the great personality of the legendary Hierarch, to his glorious origin, to his close collaboration with his compatriot, National Martyr Gregory V, to his national and religious activity, as Metropolitan of Patras during the difficult years of Turkish slavery, to his primary and leading role for the Revolution of 1821 against the Turkish conquerors, for the raising of the banner of the Revolution in Agia Lavra, the raising of the flag in the square of Agios Georgios in Patras, to his horrible treatment by Goura during the civil war and in his death in Nafplion, on May 30, 1826.

“Germanos of Old Patras” emphasised His Eminence, “from his pedestal in the High Threshing Floors of Patras, where the gratitude of the people of Patras erected his Statue, blesses us, inspires us and leads us with his eternal trumpeting: Either we are freed or we die”.

The Divine Liturgy was attended by a large number of faithful and a large group of nuns from Romania, led by two priests of the Cluj Metropolis.
