Over 7,700 earthquakes hit Santorini as Israel prepares for potential tsunami

Santorini is at heightened risk of landslides due to ongoing seismic activity, while Israel prepares for a potential tsunami triggered by the tremors in Greece.

Since January 26, more than 7,700 earthquakes have been recorded in the Santorini-Amorgos seismic zone, with over 6,100 registering above magnitude 1. On Tuesday, more than 1,300 tremors were detected, with the strongest reaching magnitudes of 4.9 to 5.0. The tremors shifted northeast on Wednesday, with the largest quake registering 5.1.

Experts warn that Santorini, with its steep caldera slopes, is particularly vulnerable to landslides, a risk that increases with continued seismic activity. Similar events have occurred historically, with landslides triggered by large earthquakes over the centuries, including in 1507, 1508, 1870, 1926 and 1956. These landslides were often caused by seismic activity outside the caldera, in areas like Crete and Rhodes.

Since January 27, limited landslides have been reported in areas such as Red Beach and the Old Port. Authorities are concerned that ongoing seismic activity could lead to more significant landslides, especially in tourist-heavy areas. Enhanced monitoring and preventive measures are being urged.

A state of emergency was declared on Santorini Thursday, with the declaration set to remain in effect until March 1, civil protection authorities announced. Tremors continue to rattle the area, raising the risk of serious landslides and rockfalls.

Meanwhile, Israel is preparing for a potential tsunami in response to the seismic tremors in Greece, the Jerusalem Post reported Thursday. On Wednesday, the Deputy Head of Israel’s National Security Council convened an urgent meeting with government agencies to assess the threat. Plans include protecting critical infrastructure and preparing evacuation routes. If the earthquake does not trigger a tsunami, Israel is also preparing to assist Greece with international aid missions.
