Oakleigh Grammar hosts 400 at 3-day National Schools Event, and wins two events
At 5pm on Tuesday 2 May, Greek Orthodox Schools from around the country descended on host school Oakleigh Grammar, for the 2023 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event (GOAANSE). The event kicked off with a Blessing and Opening Ceremony at Sts Anargiri Church Oakleigh.
Over three days, students competed in Boys and Girls Futsal, Boys ad Girls Volleyball, Boy Football, Girls Netball, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Boys and Girls Table Tennis.
Oakleigh Grammar was triumphant in Boys Basketball and Girls Volleyball in some thrilling matches, supported by a boisterous and supportive home crowd.
A highlight of the event was the Creative Arts Festival where each school presented a song, dance, poem, presentation or play. The event was followed by a dinner dance where students and teachers came together in celebration.
The presentation and closing ceremony took place on the last day before students returned to their home states.
Oakleigh Grammar Principal Mark Robertson sums up the event: “We enjoyed an amazing few days of sporting competition, creative arts performances and camaraderie. It was particularly heart-warming to see staff and students come together on the dance floor at the gala dinner in celebration of culture and friendship. And of course, it was wonderful to see our remarkable Girls Volleyball team and outstanding Boys Basketball crowned champions – my congratulations to them and all teams in the competition which was conducted with humility and respect.”
