Metropolitan Andreas of Konitsa fell asleep in the Lord

His Eminence Metropolitan Andreas, formerly Metropolitan of Dryinoupolis, Pogoniani, and Konitsa, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, 5 April 2025, at the age of 86.

The late Hierarch had been hospitalised since 24 December 2024, in the Intensive Care Unit of Hatzikosta Hospital in Ioannina, following a severe stroke. Despite the doctors’ efforts, his health condition showed no improvement.

During this time, he underwent several surgeries and received appropriate medical treatment, but his condition did not improve, despite the coordinated efforts of the medical staff.

Biography of the Metropolitan

His Eminence Metropolitan Andreas (Trembelas) of Konitsa was born in Patras in 1939.

He graduated from the Theological School of Athens in 1963. He was ordained a deacon in 1968 and a presbyter in 1969.

He served as a preacher in the Metropolis of Dryinoupolis from 1967 (initially as a layman, then as a deacon, and later as a presbyter and archimandrite) until 1995.

On 25 January 1995, he was elected Metropolitan of Dryinoupolis with 32 votes, with fellow candidates Archimandrite Chrysostomos Koutoulakis (31 votes) and Ierotheos Petridis (4 votes).

He was ordained Metropolitan of Dryinoupolis, Pogoniani, and Konitsa on 28 January 1995.

Due to the stroke and his health condition, he was relieved from his duties by the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece on 10 March 2025, and Metropolitan Maximos of Ioannina took over as Locum Tenens.
