Melbourne: Five Loaves volunteers make and deliver fresh sandwiches for homeless at Queen Victoria Market
On Sunday, 17 July 2022 at Saints Constantine and Helen, South Yarra, Five Loaves volunteers gathered to make sandwiches for those experiencing food insecurity including homeless people with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and under the guidance of His Grace Bishop Kyriakos.
The evening started with prayer from parish priest reverend father Panteleimon Laskaris. More than 30 volunteers came to assist in making 500 sandwiches. The sandwiches produced were ham and cheese and cheese and vegemite.
Following the completion of the sandwich making a small group of volunteers went to Queen Victoria Market to distribute the sandwiches to those in need.
The volunteers had an opportunity to speak with the homeless people living on the street. They were also informed that many homeless, lay cardboard on the ground and sleep on top.
Present at the Queen Victoria market were homeless people from different nationalities and ages highlighting that homelessness doesn’t discriminate. It was particularly sad to see elderly people there who are experiencing homelessness.
Five Loaves aims to keep building the outreach program in the District of Melbourne to continue to serve those in need.
