Medical statement on the health of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania

Despite his already complicated medical history, the Archbishop’s condition is reported as stable, according to the hospital’s initial medical statement.

The report further indicates that the Archbishop is undergoing all necessary medical tests and receiving appropriate care under the supervision of Professor Anastasia Kotanidou, a specialist in Pulmonology and Intensive Care.

His progress is being closely monitored and continuously evaluated by the attending medical team.

Archbishop of Albania transferred to Athens with gastrorrhagia symptoms

His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and All Albania was transferred from Tirana to Evangelismos Hospital in Athens on 3 January aboard an Air Force aircraft following a deterioration in his health.

Since 30 December 2024, Archbishop Anastasios had been hospitalised in a Tirana hospital due to a viral infection. His health condition deteriorated, resulting in gastrorrhagia, making it necessary to transfer him to Evangelismos Hospital.

The air evacuation was carried out using a C-27 aircraft of the Hellenic Air Force. The Archbishop was accompanied by a doctor and two rescuers from the National Emergency Aid Centre’s Flying Health Personnel Team.

The aircraft landed at the Elefsina military airport at 19:34 on Thursday night, and the Archbishop was immediately transferred to Evangelismos Hospital by an ambulance unit.

Archbishop Anastasios is not intubated and is able to communicate normally with his surroundings while undergoing a series of tests. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition, and the first medical update on his health progress is expected in the coming days.

His medical care is being overseen by Professor of Pulmonology and Intensive Care Anastasia Kotanidou, who had also managed his hospitalisation in 2020 when the Archbishop contracted the coronavirus and was admitted to the ICU of the same hospital.
