Greek PM Mitsotakis: The message of the Polytechnic Uprising does not dim over time
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasised the importance of free parliamentary democracy in his message for the anniversary of the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising on Sunday, stressing that its message of resistance and of demanding these rights did not dim over time.
“On the contrary, it is a permanent symbol of progress that is neither trapped in the past nor offers itself for party exploitation. That is why, 51 years later, it continues to shine out. To signal dedication to Democracy. Faith in unity. And the prospects of a better life.”
Present-day Greece “honours the fighters of ’73 with its universities open to modern knowledge. Recalling that the junta was the one who first desecrated and destroyed them. It also welcomes our historic anniversary, translating the demands of the people and students at that time into today’s tangible policies. For more jobs, greater development and improved earnings,” Mitsotakis added.
The premier concluded by highlighting that this was also the 50th anniversary since the first free elections of the post-junta period took place, noting that this fact comes to underline the value of “the parliamentarism of freedom and the political stability of security and prosperity. Facts that are establishing themselves and spreading. In a strong homeland where the lessons of yesterday strengthen the outlook towards tomorrow.”
