Greek community in Aleppo safe amid escalating conflict
Diplomatic sources confirm that the historic Greek community in Aleppo, Syria, consisting of about 50 families, is safe amid the recent escalation in the city.
The Greek Embassy in Damascus and the honorary consul in Aleppo are in constant contact with the community, advising against not to move.
The embassy has received 40 requests for evacuation, which will be coordinated by the United Nations, with a convoy heading to Damascus. The Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Management Unit remains on standby.
The escalation in Aleppo follows a surprise rebel offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham on November 26, which resulted in the first shift in control of the city since 2016. The conflict has intensified as various foreign powers, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran, back opposing factions. The ongoing war has displaced millions and exacerbated tensions in the region.
