Greece begins two-year term at UN Security Council

Greece’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) officially begins on Thursday, highlighted by a welcoming ceremony at the UN headquarters.

Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, will join his counterparts from Denmark, Somalia, Pakistan and Panama in the event.

The ceremony includes the symbolic placement of the flags of the five incoming nations in the Security Council chamber, alongside those of the existing members: the five permanent members (China, Russia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom) and the five non-permanent members (Slovenia, Algeria, South Korea, Guyana, and Sierra Leone), whose terms conclude in 2025.

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis recently outlined Greece’s strategic priorities for its two-year tenure on the Security Council in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

These priorities include promoting the peaceful resolution of disputes, upholding international law, empowering women in peace and security efforts, safeguarding children in armed conflicts, addressing the existential threat of the climate crisis and strengthening maritime security.
