Greece and Korea sign cultural cooperation memorandum

Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni signed a Memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation with Korea’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Mr. Yu In-Chon. During their meeting ministers highlighted the excellent political and diplomatic relations between Greece and Korea.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture, the meeting also addressed the issue of the illegal trafficking of cultural goods, with both countries actively seeking the return of their unlawfully exported cultural treasures.

Mendoni proposed and her Korean counterpart agreed, to draft and sign a Memorandum of Understanding on preventing illegal trafficking of cultural goods, in line with UNESCO’s 1970 Convention, ratified by both nations.

Korea reiterated its support for Greece’s request to reunify the Parthenon Sculptures in Athens, a position affirmed by Minister Yu In-Chon. Mendoni thanked Yu for Korea’s ongoing support and invited him to Athens to co-sign the Memorandum on illegal trafficking of cultural goods.

Additionally, both ministers agreed to exchange specialists and experts in the protection, documentation, preservation, restoration and promotion of cultural heritage. They also decided to enhance cooperation between cultural institutions in music, theatre and dance, as well as organise joint exhibitions and exchange museum collections.
