“Five Loaves Initiative”: 500 hot meals and 650 sandwiches made for vulnerable in Melbourne

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, and under the guidance of His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis, Saint Catherine’s Church in Malvern participated in the ‘Five Loaves Initiative’.

On Thursday, 8 December 2022, the ‘Five Loaves Initiative’ completed the Hot Food Program for this year with an amazing effort.

Parish Priest Father George Adamakis, Presvytera Irene together with the Philoptochos and volunteers from the Greek Orthodox Parish of Saint Catherine in Malvern East, set a new record after producing 500 hot meals for the homeless and vulnerable in the community.

More than 35 trays of pastitsio were baked. Together with the pastitio were spring vegetables, fresh fruit, rizogalo (Greek rice pudding), snacks and water.

The management from the crisis accommodation centres and the vulnerable and homeless at the Queen Victoria Market were overwhelmed with gratitude for the offering of delicious food.

On Sunday, 11 December 2022, more than 500 sandwiches were freshly made at Saint Catherine’s to help feed those living on Melbourne’s streets and in crisis accommodation.

The sandwiches were distributed at the Queen Victoria Market and at crisis accommodation centres in the Melbourne.

It was heartening to see young families participate in this important initiative to help spread the light of Christ in the darkness.
