EU Commissioner Várhely responds to question on latest desecration at Panaghia Sumela Monastery
EU Commissioner Olivér Várhely, whose portfolio is the Union’s Neighborhood and Enlargement, replied to a Greek MEP’s question this week regarding the latest desecration allowed by Turkish authorities at the historic Panaghia Sumela monastery in northeast Asia Minor, in the Pontus region.
Várhely responded that the European Commission is committed to maintaining cultural legacy in Turkey, while saying that Turkey’s culture and tourism ministry commenced a probe to find out which officials allowed the recent filming of a commercial with a disc jockey at the landmark Orthodox religious site.
