Diocese of Adelaide celebrates the annual cutting of the Vasilopita 2025

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Holy Diocese of Adelaide again gathered for its annual Diocese-wide celebration of the cutting of St Basil’s pie (Vasilopita) on the evening of Thursday, 2nd of January 2025. Priests and representatives from parishes of the Archdiocese from across Adelaide came together, also joined by Fr Georges El-Tahan of the Antiochian parish of St Elias and Fr Soterios from Cyprus.

For only the second time in its history, this event was held at the Archdiocesan Church of St Sophia (Wisdom of God) in Bowden. His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide presided assisted by Father Panagiotis Photakis (from the Archdiocesan offices) and Father John Saredakis (Parish Priest of St Sophia).

His Grace delivered His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia’s New Year’s encyclical to a full Church. He particularly emphasised and reinforced His Eminence’s poignant exhortation to make prayer our first and last act of the day rather than our mobile phones.

The Saint Nectarios Youth Group finalised proceedings with a brief performance of some traditional Christmas/New Year’s carols, after which His Grace distributed Vasilopita to all of the attendees.

It was a pleasant evening and a wonderful way for the faithful of Adelaide to gather together in solidarity for the year to come. May Saint Basil’s blessing be upon all the faithful of Adelaide and of all people everywhere.
