Commemoration of the fall of Constantinople in Athens
Commemorative events for the 570th anniversary of the Fall of Constantinople were held on Sunday, May 28, in Athens.
In the Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, a memorial service was held for the defenders of the City of Constantinople, officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Theodoritos of Laodicea, Director of the Representation Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Athens.
This was followed by the laying of wreaths at the statue of the last emperor, Constantine Palaiologos, in Metropolitan Square, and then a procession and ceremony at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square. The President of the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinople, Professor Mr. Nikolaos Ouzounoglou, spoke about the anniversary in the Church.
The events were attended by the Regional Governor of Attica, Mr. Giorgos Patoulis, the President of the Regional Council of Attica, Mr. Giorgos Dimopoulos, the President of the Municipal Council of Athens, Mr. Eleftherios Skiadas, the President of the Society of Byzantine Studies of the Prefecture of Preveza, Mr. Evangelos Katsimbras, representatives of institutions, associations, and a large number of people.
