Christos Yannaras has died at the age of 89

The great Greek intellectual, Mr. Christos Yannaras, one of the most popular contemporary Greek philosophy professors and authors, has passed away at the age of 89 on Saturday 24 August 2024.

The news of his death was announced by his son via Facebook. Christos Yannaras was a fellow of the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

He was an elected member of the Society of Greek Authors as well as the International Academy of Human Sciences (Académie Internationale des Sciences Humaines) in Brussels.

He wrote articles on social and political issues, contributing regularly to the newspaper To Vima for 13 years, and from 1993 onwards, to Kathimerini. He also made television appearances.

In 2019 Christos Giannaras was honoured by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with the Offikion of Archon Grand Orator of the Holy Great Church of Christ.

He leaves behind a substantial body of work that explores the differences between Greek and Western European philosophy and Orthodox Christian tradition.

His book The Freedom of Morality is considered to have defined the core of what later became known as “Neo-Orthodoxy” and has been described as “the May ’68 of Orthodox theology and ethics.”

Many of his works have been translated into at least 10 European languages.
