Celebration of the Feast of the Synaxis of the Archangels in Geraldton, WA
As is the yearly tradition in the state of Western Australia, the Feast of the Synaxis of the Archangels was celebrated in the regional city of Geraldton on the weekend of the 5th and 6th of November 2022.
With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Fr Terry Gerovasilis represented His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea at the festal celebrations held at the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Geraldton WA.
Fr Terry served Matins and Divine Liturgy on Sunday the 6th of November with the Vespers service held the evening before, on Saturday the 5th of November.
About 150 people made the 400 km journey north from Perth to join the local community of Geraldton for the celebrations.
At the end of the service, a procession around the Church with the icons of the Archangels was conducted as well as the blessing of the five loaves. Following the conclusion of the service, a celebratory lunch was held in Fitzgerald Hall near the Church, hosted by the Hellenic Society of Geraldton.
The annual celebration of the Archangels is a special pilgrimage for many of the families in Perth who originally came from Geraldton. The Church was built in the 1960’s to service what was, at that time, a large community of Greek diaspora who settled in Geraldton because of the local fishing and mining industries.
However, in the 1980s and 1990s, many of the families left to relocate to Perth. For this reason, it is a special occasion for many of the families to return with their children and grandchildren to the idyllic, rural, beachside town whose population is about 32,000.
Fr Terry conveyed to the faithful in attendance, and the Committee members of the Hellenic Society of Geraldton, the blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios.
