Call for peace from the Patriarchate of Georgia

The Patriarchate of Georgia expressed its sorrow over the events that took place on November 30 on Rustaveli Avenue, where a demonstration escalated into a serious confrontation.

In its statement, it called on all sides to exercise wisdom, respect the law, and uphold morality. Additionally, it urged the state to promptly inform the public about developments and investigations while praying for the restoration of peace and the protection of all those involved.

The full statement reads as follows:

We express deep regret that, despite the Church’s appeals, the demonstration on Rustaveli Avenue on November 30 escalated into a serious confrontation. Footage disseminated through the media and social networks clearly shows actions that exceed the boundaries of legality and morality.

The current situation creates tension and poses a threat to the peaceful coexistence of citizens.

We value all individuals on both sides and pray for them, as well as for the swift recovery of the injured. At the same time, we renew our appeal to the youth and demonstrators, in general, to exercise prudence and respect the limits of protest. We also call on law enforcement officials to demonstrate maximum patience and act strictly within the bounds of legality. The state must provide timely and reliable information to society regarding violations and the progress of investigations.

No matter how significant the cause for which we struggle, we must not forget that humanity is made in the image and likeness of God, the most precious creation in this world.

We pray to the Holy Theotokos, asking her to protect the blessed land of Georgia with peace.
