Athens to host the 39th European Film Awards in January 2027

Athens is set to become the first city in southeastern Europe to host the 39th European Film Awards, on 16 January 2027. According to an announcement on Wednesday, this is the result of a successful proposal submitted by the Hellenic Centre for Cinema, Audiovisual Media and Creation (EKKOMED) – Creative Greece, to the European Film Academy. The proposal was supported by the Ministries of Culture, National Economy and Finance and Tourism.

The event marks a prime moment for the Greek film industry and the promotion of the country on the European and international cultural scene.

EKKOMED – Creative Greece, in collaboration with the European Film Academy, will undertake the organisation of the main ceremony and the parallel events that will take place in January 2027. The event will be supported by important public entities, including the three ministries, the Municipality of Athens, the Region of Attica, the public broadcaster ERT, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated: “Athens welcomes one of the most emblematic events of European cinema, having the honour of hosting, for the first time, the awarding of the 39th European Film Awards, on the initiative of the Hellenic Centre for Cinema, Audiovisual Media and Creativity – Creative Greece, which also undertook the joint organisation of the event. The selection of Athens validates its dynamism as an international cultural pole, hosting events of supralocal scope, a dynamic core of the modern creative industry, strengthening the extroversion of domestic audiovisual production. It is, at the same time, an outstanding opportunity to renew the bonds of our creators with their European counterparts.

It highlights their high-quality work, proving that the systematic efforts of the Ministry of Culture are bearing fruit with the constant encouragement and substantial support of the Greek audiovisual sector. By combining the perfect aesthetic result with commercial extroversion, it demonstrates that culture is both a good and a product, supporting the workers in it. I am sure that in a few days creators and audience will enjoy a unique event, the success of which is guaranteed”.
