Alkiviadis Stefanis: Let us keep Mount Athos above political games

The new Civil Administrator of Mount Athos, Mr. Alkiviadis Stefanis, a retired general of the Greek Armed Forces, recently spoke about the significance of his new role, describing it as “a very special task, a new mission” that he has undertaken “with great honour and a profound sense of responsibility.”

In an interview with the radio station Proto Programma, Mr. Stefanis emphasised the importance of maintaining peace on Mount Athos, ensuring that pilgrims can find inner tranquility through their faith. He highlighted the global spiritual significance of Mount Athos and underscored the need to support the monks in their work without the hindrance of administrative challenges. As the State’s representative, he expressed his commitment to resolving any such issues.

When asked about the possibility of lifting the ban on women entering Mount Athos, Stefanis firmly stated that the self-governance of Mount Athos is non-negotiable. He emphasised that any decisions would be made in close collaboration with the Protaton (the main church in Karyes), the Monasteries, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Orthodox Church.

Finally, according to ertnews.gr, Mr. Stefanis stressed the importance of keeping Mount Athos, the Church and faith above political games. He warned against using Mount Athos as a “tool” for political gain, reminding that it belongs to all Orthodox Christians and Greeks. He also called for unity in matters of faith and national identity, urging that other issues be set aside in favour of these greater priorities.
