Albania prays for the health of Archbishop Anastasios
By Fr. Elias Makos
The health of His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and All Albania has garnered widespread concern across Albania, uniting both religious and political figures, as well as citizens of all faiths. The Archbishop’s monumental contribution to Albanian society and his dedication to fostering interreligious harmony have left an indelible mark on the nation.
Albanian Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku visited Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, where she met with Bishop Anastasi of Kruja. Alongside Fr. Harallamb Gjoka and Fr. Spiro Topanxha, the Bishop remains by the Archbishop’s side as he undergoes treatment. Balluku was briefed on the Archbishop’s condition and expressed her support and prayers for his recovery.
Political leaders from across Albania have also joined in expressing their concern and prayers. Sali Berisha, leader of the Opposition and former president and prime minister, shared a heartfelt message on social media: “The Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania is in critical condition. I invite everyone to join our prayers—Orthodox believers and all Albanians—for the health and healing of this merciful servant of God, who with divine love and dedication has done so much for our country.”
Former Prime Minister Pandeli Majko also expressed his sentiments succinctly: “I pray for the health of Anastasios.”
Similarly, MP Niko Peleshi, a former Deputy Prime Minister, underlined the Archbishop’s invaluable contributions, stating: “Let us pray for the health of Archbishop Anastasios, with gratitude for his priceless role in reviving the Albanian Orthodox Church.”
The Interreligious Council of Albania, of which Archbishop Anastasios was the 2024 president (a one-year term), issued a statement recognizing his profound influence: “His contribution and inspiration for interreligious cooperation and understanding are a lesson and a guide for all of us.”
Archbishop Anastasios has been a cornerstone of spiritual renewal and social development in Albania. His efforts in rebuilding the Albanian Orthodox Church after decades of religious oppression and his work in fostering interfaith dialogue have earned him widespread respect across the nation.
As the Archbishop remains in critical condition, Albania’s political and religious leaders, along with its citizens, continue to unite in prayer for his health and recovery, a testament to the profound impact of his life and ministry.
