Floods ravage Rhodes, authorities rush to aid stranded residents
Severe flooding continues to wreak havoc on the island of Rhodes, with heavy rains triggering a 112 emergency alert.
Residents in Ialyssos, Rhodes Town, Kallithea and Petaloudes were instructed to limit movement due to hazardous conditions.
Floodwaters have inundated homes and streets, with the Ialyssos River breaching its banks again, damaging a key bridge in Marangoi and cutting off access to about 100 residents, state broadcaster ERT reported Tuesday. Military teams are constructing temporary embankments to restore connectivity.
Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos announced damage assessments are underway, with financial aid of up to 10,000 euros expected before the holidays. “We are addressing immediate needs while planning resilient infrastructure improvements,” he said.
The municipality, in partnership with the local hotel association, is offering temporary shelter and has launched a drive for essentials such as bedding, clothing and food.
