Patriarch of Alexandria visits South Africa

On Thursday, 28 November 2024, His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa arrived in Johannesburg, the seat of the Holy Metropolis of Johannesburg and Pretoria, for a short pastoral visit.

At the airport, the Patriarch was warmly welcomed by His Eminence Metropolitan Damaskinos of Johannesburg and Pretoria, Greek Ambassador Georgios Aravositas, Cypriot High Commissioner Antonios Mandritis, Egyptian Ambassador Ahmad Ali Sharief, and various community leaders. The Patriarch honoured the Ambassador with the Grand Cross of Saint Mark for his longstanding contributions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Hellenic diaspora.

Visit to SAHETI School

The following morning, the Patriarch visited SAHETI School, one of the largest Greek schools outside Greece, founded by renowned Greek lawyer Michael Bizos. SAHETI is recognised as one of the top schools in South Africa. The Patriarch was warmly received by the Chairman of the Board, Kyriakos Tappos, Principal Morgan Rhys, faculty members, and students. The students recited Greek poems, performed traditional songs, and showcased Greek dances in his honour. The program, presented by the school’s top students, highlighted the school’s cultural pride.

Addressing the students, Patriarch Theodore spoke about the love of Christ and the power of faith, urging them to cherish their ancestral homeland and to speak Greek, a language rich in history, philosophy, and faith. He wished the graduating students success in their upcoming entrance exams and encouraged them never to forget the nurturing environment of their school.

Humanitarian Visit to Orange Farm

The Patriarch and his delegation later visited the impoverished area of Orange Farm, one of South Africa’s most underprivileged regions, supported by the “Merchants of Life” organisation under Ekaterini Konstantinidi’s guidance. With deep emotion, the Patriarch distributed food and toys to the local children, an initiative supported by Archon Ioannis Baladakis and Panagiotis Baladakis.

Visit to the Orthodox Centre of Love and Care

Finally, the Patriarch visited the Orthodox Centre of Love and Care, which provides shelter, love, and hope to orphaned children and those from abusive or broken homes. He distributed gifts and food to the children and commended the dedication of Greek volunteers and their collaborators for their selfless service. The Patriarch expressed heartfelt blessings, encouraging them to continue supporting the vulnerable, especially children who find warmth and protection in their care.
