Ancient road unearthed amid new Athens metro line construction
Construction of Athens’ new Metro Line 4 has uncovered a significant archaeological find: a 22-meter stretch of an ancient road dating back to the 4th century BCE.
Discovered at the University of Athens campus in Kaisariani, this road sheds light on the ancient Potamos municipality near Mount Ymittos. Following approval from Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS), the road will be temporarily removed, then reinstalled atop the Panepistimioupoli metro station once construction concludes.
The road, used from the Classical to Roman eras, is the first artifact from Line 4 to be marked for preservation and relocation. Other finds along the line – near Akadimia, Kypseli, Exarchia and Zografou – did not warrant such measures.
Metro officials assure the relocation won’t significantly delay the project. Initially, the station was planned for central Kaisariani at the Near East Stadium. However, local officials in 2017 raised concerns over traffic and parking disruptions, prompting its relocation to the university campus.
