Metropolitan of Kyiv participated in state events honouring the Holodomor victims
On the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor, 23 November 2024, His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine participated in state events honoring all those who perished from starvation in Ukraine during 1921–1923, 1932–1933, and 1946–1947.
Specifically, at the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the Primate of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine, along with Archbishop Agapit of Vyshhorod and Bishop Avraamiy of Boryspil, attended an interfaith gathering.
The event was held in the presence of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, First Lady Olena Zelenska, political and military leaders, state officials, representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organisations, ambassadors, and heads of missions from over fifty countries, chaplains, and guests.
Later, the participants proceeded to the National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial,” where they honoured the memory of those who perished from starvation by laying wheat sheaves at the “Girl with Wheat Sheaves” monument.
Metropolitan Epifaniy prayed for the souls of the Holodomor victims
On the same day, Metropolitan Epifaniy led a memorial prayer service at the Memorial Sign near the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral.
Joining the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in prayer for the repose of the souls of the victims of the genocide of the Ukrainian people were Archbishop Agapit of Vyshhorod, Abbot of the Golden-Domed Monastery; Bishop Ephrem of Vasylkiv; the monastery’s brotherhood; as well as faculty and students of the Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy.
Following the memorial prayer, the victims of the Holodomor were honoured with the laying of lit lamps and flowers.
