Sakellaropoulou: Polytechnic Uprising reminds us that democracy is the most precious asset

“ The anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising is a pivotal moment for our democracy,” emphasised the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in her message on Sunday for the 51st anniversary of the student uprising of 1973, against the military junta ruling Greece at that time.

“ Today, in the era of multiple crises for democracy, it reminds us that it is the most precious asset and the unsurpassed horizon of our social and political coexistence,” she added.

The president noted that it was a day “of honour and remembrance of the those who fought and the victims who had the courage to confront, defying all danger, the dictatorship of the colonels. Their heroic act was the beginning of the end of the regime and the foundation of the post-junta democracy. In their youthful drive and passion for freedom, the most progressive and peaceful period of our modern history took root. The Polytechnic has timeless value and universal scope.

Today, in the era of multiple crises for democracy, it reminds us that it is the most precious asset and the unsurpassed horizon of our social and political coexistence.”

President Sakellaropoulou did not lay a wreath at the Polytechnic this year due to ill health and was represented by the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic, Aliki Hatzi.
