Metropolitan of Kyiv and ICRC delegation discuss humanitarian efforts amid ongoing conflict

On Tuesday, 12 November 2024, His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphaniy of Kyiv, met with Jürg Eglin, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Ukraine, at his residence.

During the conversation, they discussed the significant losses and destruction resulting from the ongoing Russian aggression, the critical situation of Ukrainian prisoners of war whose rights to safety and humane treatment are reportedly being violated by Russian authorities, the evacuation of the wounded, and various humanitarian projects aimed at supporting those affected by the invasion.

“The war, unfortunately, continues to claim many lives—both military and civilian. The enemy, through relentless attacks on our infrastructure and what can be described as state terrorism, is trying to force us into capitulation. The issue of our soldiers held in Russian captivity also remains particularly challenging. I frequently receive letters and questions about this when I visit regions and speak with the families of the captives. As a democratic country, we adhere to all international standards and conventions regarding the treatment of prisoners of war, while the aggressor blatantly disregards them. Yet, we hold hope that our defenders will eventually be freed,” said Metropolitan Epiphaniy.

The parties also explored potential cooperation in evacuating residents from dangerous areas, distributing humanitarian aid for the winter season, and supporting the integration of internally displaced persons.
