93-year-old Greek-Australian donated a mammogram machine and ambulance to the Kefalonia Hospital

An elderly Greek woman from Australia made donations worth tens of thousands of euros to the Kefalonia Hospital. This donation was made by Mrs Rubina Liosatou, 93 years old, who left Greece 65 years ago for Australia, where she lives today. Mrs Liosatou never forgot her special hometown, Argostoli, to which she donated a digital mammogram machine and an ambulance. “I always liked to give to others and I also worked at the Argostoli hospital as a volunteer,” Mrs. Liosatou emphasised to ERT.

“She offered a piece of herself so that we could acquire this mammogram machine, which is important for the health of all women. She also donated an ambulance to the hospital, which can be used to discharge patients, so that that the National emergency centre (EKAB) is not occupied with discharges”, said the administrator of the Argostoli Hospital, Mr. Dimitris Martinis.

But this is not the only donation, since 2023, Mrs. Liosatou decided to help renovate the Hospital of Pyrgos, the place where her husband was born.

“to the Pyrgos hospital, she donated beds for short-term hospitalisations, which are electrically powered in order to better treat patients who come to the Emergency Department, and a modern X-ray machine for the radiology department,” emphasised the director of the 6th Health Department, Mr. Yannis Karvelis.

“The face of the hospital changed, I did this in memory of my husband. We love our homeland, we love it very much. I wanted very much to do something for my country of Greece”, explained Mrs. Liosatou.

Her actions seem to be imitated by other Greek expatriates, who have expressed an interest in contributing to their local places of origin.
