Formal proceedings opened at 7.00pm with Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis who, as the Master of Ceremony, welcomed guests and offered an Acknowledgement of Country. His Grace Bishop Elpidios blessed the table and proceedings for the evening and on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, congratulated the organisers of the conference for the resounding success that it had been.
After the delicious entrée, a brief address was offered by KCA President, Mr George Pizanis, who also acknowledged this year’s Kastellorizian Young Achiever of the Year, Ms Rebecca Mangos. Rebecca also delivered an address, which was not only inspirational, but it also clearly showcased her extraordinary capabilities, demonstrating why she had won the award. This was followed by a brief address from Mr Jim Manifis, President of the Castellorizian Association of WA who, in turn, paid tribute to the 2023 Kastellorizian of the Year, Ms Marilyn Tsolakis. Mr Manifis also announced a new initiative for the Kastellorizian youth of Australia, which is intended to start in mid-2024.
Conference Committee member, Dr John Yiannakis OAM, then gave a vote of thanks to Mr Manifis for his hard work and commitment in getting this year’s conference underway, despite two previous cancellations due to the prevailing pandemic at the time. Dr Yiannakis also acknowledged his fellow committee members.
One of the highlights of the evening was the exhilarating performance by classical singer, Ms Zoe Kikiros. A seasoned performer for the West Australian Opera, Zoe wowed the audience with her stirring and impressive vocals, attracting a resounding applause at the end of her performance.
Raffle prizes were drawn between dinner and dessert, with the final vote of thanks offered by the MC. With the formalities over, a relaxed and even more festive atmosphere ensued, fuelled by the upbeat tunes of Michael Anastas and his Bouzoukia Perth Band, with local Greek singer Mr Apostolos Fotiadis, as well as his Bluetones Band. The guests enjoyed themselves well into the evening, with many new friendships having been forged.
On the morning of the same day, the delegates had attended the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Church of Sts Constantine and Helene in Northbridge. The Conference took place over three days from the 20th-22nd of October.
