The Ecumenical Patriarch to visit Athens from May 19 to 21

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will visit the Capital of Greece, Athens, from the 19 to the 21 May 2023.

On Friday, 19 May 2023, in the afternoon, The Patriarch will meet with His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, and will formally co-sign the concession of the Holy Church of ‘Agios Nikolaos Ptohokomeiou” (on Vasilissis Sofias Street, next to the Embassy of Great Britain), to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The Ecumenical Patriarch praised the event last Sunday at the Phanar (14-5-2023), during the reception in the Throne Room, after the Patriarchal Divine Liturgy.

He underlined that it is the first time, after the granting of the Autocephaly of the Church of Greece (1850), that the Ecumenical Patriarchate acquires “its own altar” in Athens, where the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Jerusalem already have, as well as the Sinai Monastery.

On Saturday, May 20 at 12 noon, at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre “Maria Kallas”, the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Kostas Bakoyannis, will award, in a special ceremony, the honorary distinction of “Honorary Athenian” to His All-Holiness the Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

On Sunday, May 21, the feast of Saints Constantine and Helen, equal the the apostles, the Patriarch will officiate during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Church of ‘Agios Nikolaos’, the Church of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, from now on, in the centre of Athens and then he will return to the Phanar.
