Bishop Bartholomew attends Hanukkah service at the Hobart Synagogue
Yesterday evening, 19 December 2022, His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Charioupolis, the Archiepiscopal Vicar of Canberra, overseeing Tasmania attended a service for the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, at the Hobart Synagogue, which is the oldest Synagogue in Australia.
His Grace was accompanied by Reverend Father Dimitrios Katsis, Parish Priest of the Church of Holy Trinity, Hobart.
Present at the service was the Governor of Tasmania Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, the Ambassador of Israel His Excellency Mr. Amir Maimon, Mr Jeff Schneider, President of the Hobart Synagogue, Mrs Lara Alexander MP, State member of Bass and former Australian Politician the Hon. Eric Abetz.
At the conclusion of the service His Grace Bishop Bartholomew conveyed the best wishes of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and wished the Jewish community good health, peace and happiness.
In turn the Ambassador of Israel thanked His Grace for honouring the Jewish community of Tasmania and noted that it was the first time an Orthodox Bishop in Australia has attended such a service, an act of kindness and mutual respect.
